 Vice Admiral Samuel Gravely Scholarship

One $2,500 and two $1,500 awards to Hampton Roads H.S. Seniors


Congratulations on your decision to further your education and embark on a challenging path that many begin, but too few complete.

To help, NNOA offers the Vice Admiral Samuel Gravely Scholarship to qualified students entering their freshmen year of college. VADM Gravely was distinguished as the first African-American to command a U.S. Navy warship, to be promoted to flag rank and to command an entire Navy Fleet.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Vice Admiral Samuel Gravely Scholarship, one must:

- Be a high school senior in the Hampton Roads Area of Virginia

- Hold a Grade Point Average of 3.0 or better

- Have been accepted to attend a four-year degree program at an accredited college or university

 - Complete the enclosed application with ALL required attachments, including a letter of recommendation from a school official (teacher, guidance counselor, principal/assistant principal)

- Complete an essay describing how you would improve your city if you were the Mayor. The essay must be a minimum of 500 words typed, double-spaced and single-sided.

We will accept essays and applications post-marked not later than 

April 4, 2008.

Awards

We will announce three recipients in April 2008. One first-place award of $2,500 and two runner-up awards of $1,500 will be presented at a formal ceremony in the month of May.

Awards will be sent to the awardee's college/university upon verification of enrollment.
